Horizon Europe 2021-2022 Work Programmes are out!

The European Commission has published the Work Programmes of Horizon Europe for the 2021-2022 period, with a total budget of €14.7 billion. Researchers and innovators in Switzerland can participate in most collaborative projects and their funding is secure.

Horizon Europe is the successor European Framework Programme to Horizon 2020. It will run from 2021 to 2027 with a total budget of €95.5 billion. Funding opportunities under Horizon Europe are defined in Work Programmes (WPs). These WPs are based on objectives for Europe, such as accelerating the green and digital transitions or contributing to EU resilience against future crises.

Like Horizon 2020, Horizon Europe will continue to support the entire research and innovation cycle. It will encourage stronger involvement of citizens and more clearly communicate the positive impacts of research and innovation, such as progress in the health and environmental sectors.

Horizon Europe is divided into 3 Pillars. In Pillar 1 "Excellent Science", the WPs for "Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions" and "Research Infrastructures" have just been published.

In Pillar 2 "Global Challenges and European Industrial Competitiveness", the WPs for all 6 thematic clusters are out. These clusters support and implement EU policies while tackling global challenges. Furthermore, they facilitate collaboration and enhance the impact of research and innovation in developing new services, technologies and therapies.

In Pillar 3 "Innovative Europe", the "European Innovation Ecosystems" WP has been published.

The WP of "Widening Participation and Strengthening the European Research Area", a horizontal activity across all Pillars, has also now been published.

Most of the funding is awarded based on competitive calls for proposals on pre-defined topics. For all of you interested in the open calls, have a good look at the funding opportunities, consult our topic previews on the Euresearch website, start forming your consortia and preparing your proposals, as the first deadlines are in September 2021.

Even if Switzerland is not yet associated to Horizon Europe, researchers and innovators in Switzerland can still participate in many calls for collaborative projects and receive the necessary funding. For further details on eligibility and funding, please check our factsheet or contact our team.
