Personalised Medicine: How does Horizon 2020 define it?

In Horizon 2020, the Societal Challenge 1 "Health, Demographic Change & Wellbeing" targets personalised medicine. Research and Innovation (R&I) actions responding to this challenge are making an investment in better health for all. The aim is to keep older people active and independent for longer and to support the development of new, safer and more effective interventions.

What is behind Horizon 2020 Societal Challenge 1 "Health, Demographic Change & Wellbeing"?

Are you active in Health research and innovation projects? Are you wondering what the key research challenges to be tackled at the European level are? The European Commission has published the main themes and research areas for the Societal Challenge 1 "Health, Demographic Change & Wellbeing".

"OPERAM focuses on multimorbidity and polypharmacy – a problem I am frequently confronted with as a doctor"

OPERAM was the first Horizon 2020 project to be coordinated by a Swiss partner (University of Bern) in the area of Health. OPERAM specifically targets multimorbid older adults. One major component is a large multi-centre randomised clinical trial that will use a sophisticated software-based tool to help optimise medication therapy and reduce hospitalisation in the elderly.

Horizon 2020 Health Proposals with Industry Involvement: More Opportunities for SMEs to Exploit

Small and medium sized entreprises (SMEs) play a key role in the EU economy and are encouraged by the European Commission to take part in Horizon 2020 projects as partners. Under the Societal Challenge 1 "Health, Demographic Change & Wellbeing", the objective that 20% of the funding go to SMEs has been reached. However, representatives from SMEs and industry are still underrepresented in the evaluation panels. Key tips and tricks from SME evaluators are extremely useful for applicants. Interested SMEs are thus encouraged to participate in the next Euresearch Health Applicants Training. Dr med. Konrade von Bremen, Director of SWAN Isotopen AG, will give a testimonial as a former SME evaluator.
