Birth Day Prize Winners Receive €2.5 Million Euro Cash Award
More than 800 women die every day worldwide from preventable complications of pregnancy and childbirth. The EU's Horizon "Birth Day" Prize awards €2.5 million for solutions that save the lives of mothers and their babies.
The former director of reproductive health and research at the World Health Organization (WHO) spoke at the awards ceremony of the Horizon Birth Day Prize saying, "The day that you are born is the most dangerous day of your life." The challenge of the Birth Day Prize was to find a novel, safe and scalable solution to make childbirth safer. The initiative supported marketable and innovative solutions for preventable deaths of mothers and their newborn babies, and was funded by the EU, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and MSD for Mothers.
The winner, the QUARITE project, received €1 million in prize money from the European Commission. QUARITE implemented a simple but effective scheme that reduced maternal deaths in hospitals in Senegal and Mali. The second and third prize winners, CHAI MNH Nigeria and WOMAN Trial, received €1 million and €500 000 from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and MSD for Mothers, respectively.
The EU has a range of Horizon Prizes either underway or coming up for challenges including clean engines, carbon dioxide recycling, and tactile displays for visually impaired people. The idea behind these prizes is to offer a cash reward to whoever can most effectively meet the defined challenge. This type of challenge-based prize is designed to act as an incentive for innovation by prescribing the goal but not who the innovator should be or how the goal should be achieved.
