Outlook on ERC Calls in 2021 and 2022

Tentative planning and main expected novelties.

The ERC published a note informing about the tentative planning at the beginning of Horizon Europe:

Starting, Consolidator and Advanced Grant calls (as well as Proof of Concept calls) are expected to be launched in 2021 (and all consecutive years). Interviews for Advanced Grant candidates will likely be introduced in 2021.

The timing of these calls will be shifted in 2021 due to the transition to the new Framework Programme. First calls are expected to open in January 2021.

The shift in timeline is not expected to impact on eligibility rules, i.e. the relevant date likely remains the 1st January of the call year. Hence researchers having obtained their PhD between 1 January 2014 and 31 December 2018 are expected to be eligible for StG-2021 and those with PhD date between 1 January 2009 and 31 December 2013 for CoG-2021.

The panel structure is expected to be adapted for certain disciplines (see outline decided by Scientific Council) and will apply for calls launched in 2021.

Likely no Synergy Grant call will be included in Work Programme 2021, but continuation of the Synergy Grant is expected from Work Programme 2022 onwards. The Synergy Grant call 2022 is planned to open in summer and close in November 2021.
