When we hear it in the context of the Framework Programmes we usually think of the European Research Council (ERC), the successful funding programme for top-notch individual researchers. This association has become so common that one tends to forget that the ERC was newly established in the 7th Framework Programme (FP7).

Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions

The Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) are part of the priority “Excellent Science” in the “Horizon 2020” Framework Programme. The overall budget for 2014 to 2020 is €6 162 million. The MSCA support individual researchers at any stage of their career. They foster the geographical mobility of researchers and global ‘brain circulation’.

Dr Philippe Krebs came to the University of Bern after 5 years in San Diego, USA. He received a Marie Curie Career Integration Grant (CIG), which supports him in reintegrating into the European research landscape. Dr. Krebs’ project, “X-talk”, is about communication between innate and adaptive immunity.

Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions for SME

The Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (see “Horizon 2020” above) are not only providing fellowships for early-stage researchers to kick-start their career, they also offer various benefits for SMEs. Even small companies can function as a host institution for researchers on a postdoctoral level. In this case, the MSCA fellow and his or her supervisor in the SME write the proposal together.

Au revoir, Patrick!

After almost 12 years, it is time to say goodbye to Patrick Furrer, the Vice-Director of Euresearch. Not only researchers in the field of Information and Communication Technologies will miss his wide-ranging connections and astute observations. With Patrick's departure, we lose one of the dauntless pillars of our network. We wish him all the very best for his future as Vice Rector for Research at the HES-SO and say “farewell” but not “goodbye”!
