Ensure Healthy Lives and Promote Wellbeing – Horizon Europe and United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 3 (SDG3)
Aiming at healthy lives for all at all ages, SDG3 has influenced the selection of topics for the future calls in Horizon Europe in the area of health.
The UN is determined to protect the planet and ensure our health so as to take care of the needs of present and future generations alike. To achieve these objectives, they launched "Agenda 2030", with 17 Sustainable Development Goals at its core. SDG 3 aims at making people’s lives healthier. It consists of various targets that are an important point of reference for the Horizon Europe Cluster 1 on Health, which will fund collaborative research projects.
In SDG3 there are 9 targets of particular importance, which fall into separate, but overlapping groups. These include reducing maternal and child mortality, ending epidemics of various communicable diseases, reducing the burden of non-communicable diseases, and promoting mental health and well being. Additionally, they aim to reduce substance abuse, lower deaths and injuries from road accidents, and improve access to reproductive health care services. Further goals are to ensure health coverage and access to health-care services, medicines and vaccines for all, and to reduce illnesses caused by the environment (e.g., from chemicals and water, air and soil pollution).
The Health Cluster in Horizon Europe reflects the SDG 3 targets by funding research in following areas: staying healthy, creating a healthy environment, tackling diseases, health care systems, and digital solutions for health.
The first Health calls in Horizon Europe are expected to cover a wide range of topics from obesity, mental health, vaccine development and rare diseases to electromagnetic pollution and indoor air quality. Other topics could include quality of care, patient safety and the re-purposing of medicinal products, as well as smart medical devices. This and more detailed information is publicly available on the development of Health Cluster and its firs calls. Are you interested to learn more? Contact us!
