Access to Affordable, Reliable, Sustainable and Modern Energy for All
As the 8th European Framework Programme for Research and Innovation, "Horizon 2020", draws to a close, it is tempting to look back, engage in statistical evaluations and sing songs of praise. However, the programme has not yet ended and it will finish with an unexpected big bang.
The Horizon 2020 "Green Deal" call, with a budget close to €1 billion, has been developed in record time and is designed to address the goals of the European Green Deal and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). An outline of the call was made available in May 2020 and the publication of the Work Programme is expected mid-September, with a planned deadline for proposal submission at the end of January 2021. This unique opportunity to directly contribute to the achievements of SDG targets should not be missed.
Among the numerous Green Deal topics, which address almost all SDGs, there are a few that focus on the targets in SDG 7: Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all. One of the topics invites applicants to submit proposals for constructing, demonstrating and operating 100 MW hydrolysers, to be used for storing energy from renewable sources in the form of hydrogen but also as a source of green hydrogen for commercial use. The largest state-of-the art hydrogen-producing plants currently have a power capacity of only 10 MW, making this a truly ambitious endeavour.
There is another topic in the call, which when addressed appropriately, has the potential to save literally thousands of lives: Accelerating the clean energy transition and access in partnership with Africa and the Mediterranean. Cooking in confined spaces with kerosene is still common in Sub-Saharan Africa and causes serious health issues. Any improvement in the design, efficiency and availability of cleaner cooking solutions will create health benefits and measurable long-term environmental and social impacts. Clearly, the scope of this topic goes beyond cooking stoves and even though SDG 7 may be the focus of this topic, other SDGs are explicitly mentioned and are expected to be addressed.
Swiss applicants interested in submitting proposals should contact Euresearch to get the latest information about the call as well as valuable tips and tricks.
