Transforming Europe into the first Climate-neutral Continent
The new President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, considers climate change as both the greatest challenge and the greatest opportunity of our time. During her pledge for presidency, von der Leyen made fierce action towards mitigation a top priority. Shortly after taking office in December 2019, she announced “The European Green Deal” – a strategy paper outlining the ambition to make Europe the first climate-neutral continent.
The Green Deal goes well beyond fighting climate change. It also aims at cutting pollution, reducing waste and helping companies to increase their competitiveness, and is referred to as the new growth strategy. An annex to the strategy paper (“communication”) lists some 50 concrete measures of deeply transformative policy actions that will impact literally all sectors of the economy.
The Green Deal is expected to have profound consequences for European research and innovation funding. Many of the newly designed calls for proposals will likely be influenced or motivated by this strategy. Whether you work on agriculture, transport, energy systems or industrial processes, familiarising yourself with the relevant parts of the Green Deal communication is a good investment. It will help you to understand upcoming call topics in any European calls and score extra points in the impact section of your proposal.
The Swiss National Contact Points are happy to discuss the significance of the new strategy for your specific plans in Horizon 2020 and Horizon Europe!
