Throughout Europe a variety of research funding programmes exist. Their objectives are partly overlaping.

AAL Ambient Assisted Living Joint Programme

Joint R&D Funding and Support Programme addressing the demographic change in Europe by trying to enhance the quality of life of older people and strengthen the industrial base in Europe through the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT).

Public-private partnership (Joint Undertaking) focusing on embedded computer systems and aiming to tackle the research and structural challenges that the industrial sector (ARTEMISIA) faces.

The goal of ARTEMIS is to foster R&D collaboration among all stakeholders from industry and public authorities to academia and research centres to galvanise and focus the research effort.

CleanSky

Public private partnership (Joint Undertaking) focusing on research, development and demonstration projects regarding Green Air Transport.

The goal of CleanSky is to speed up technological breakthrough developments and to shorten the time to market for new solutions tested on Full Scale Demonstrators with regard to Smart Fixed Wing Aircrafts, Regional Aircrafts, Rotorcraft, Green Engines, Green Operations and Eco-Design.

Copernicus (former GMES)

Earth monitoring initiative created by the European Space Agency (ESA) and carried out in partnership by the European Commission (EC) and the ESA Member States to prepare the operational phase of the satellite services, scheduled for 2014–2020.

COST

Intergovernmental framework for European Cooperation in Science and Technology, allowing the coordination of nationally funded research on a European level. The programme thus contributes to reducing the fragmentation in European research investments and to opening the European Research Area to a worldwide cooperation.

EUREKA

European support initiative - independent from the European Commission’s framework programmes- dedicated to applied and market-oriented R&D, mainly of SMEs.
Pan-european initiative with 40 Members (incl. the EU) and is governed by the ministries of its Member States responsible for innovation.

Eurostars

European funding and support programme dedicated to R&D performing SMEs (investing >10% of full time work or of turnover in R&D).

The goal of Eurostars is to enable market driven research activities of SMEs to compete internationally and to become leaders in a given sector.
